The Directorate for Geosciences (GEO) is excited to announce the appointment of Dr. Douglas Kowalewski as GEO Program Director for Partnerships. 

Dr. Kowalewski was previously on detail in GEO OAD to explore and develop partnerships with other agencies, industry, and philanthropic organizations and to serve as the directorate subject matter expert on agency processes related to formalizing and maintaining partnerships. Since joining NSF, Dr. Kowalewski has had several roles throughout EAR and OPP. As a Program Director, Dr. Kowalewski was involved in the Frontier Research in Earth Sciences (FRES), Paleo Perspectives on Present and Projected Climate (P4CLIMATE), and Antarctic Earth Sciences (AES) programs. He also served as Antarctic Sciences Section Head in OPP from 2021 to 2022. 

Prior to joining NSF, Dr. Kowalewski served as the chair of the Earth, Environment, and Physics Department at Worcester State University (WSU), where he co-founded the on-campus Aisiku STEM Center and the Massachusetts Project Kaleidoscope Regional Network. As a faculty fellow at WSU Dr. Kowalewski worked alongside others on multiple endeavors such as the restructuring of the Grants Office and the creation of the Environmental Science major. Dr. Kowalewski also brings over five years of experience from the private sector. 

Dr. Kowalewski’s research focused on coupled climate-ice sheet behavior where he developed international partnerships to advance the team’s research objectives. He received a bachelor’s degree from Virginia Tech and a doctorate from Boston University.
