Dear Colleague Letter: Request for Information on Researcher and Educator Use Cases

February 23, 2024

This Dear Colleague Letter (DCL) is a Request for Information on Researcher and Educator Use Cases for the National Artificial Intelligence Research Resource (NAIRR). NAIRR is a vision for a shared national research infrastructure for responsible discovery and innovation in AI.

This DCL encourages response from the broad U.S. science and engineering research and education community to an RFI that is being conducted on behalf of the NAIRR Pilot federal interagency working group. The goal is to gather current and anticipated research and education use cases for the NAIRR Pilot and to also identify current and anticipated challenges and barriers that researchers and educators may face in accessing and using AI resources and tools for their activities. This DCL and the RFI do not invite research proposals.

With a fiscal year 2023 budget of $9.5 billion, NSF funds reach all 50 states through grants to nearly 2,000 colleges, universities and institutions. Each year, NSF receives more than 40,000 competitive proposals and makes about 11,000 new awards. Those awards include support for cooperative research with industry, Arctic and Antarctic research and operations, and U.S. participation in international scientific efforts.
